More on Naturalization
Resources are available online to learn more about becoming a US Citizen. Below are a few important things to keep in mind
Who is eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship?
To be eligible for naturalization, you must meet several key requirements. You need to be at least 18 years old, have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years (or 3 years if you’re married to a U.S. citizen), and have lived continuously in the U.S. during that time. You must also demonstrate good moral character, basic English reading, writing, and speaking skills, and a general understanding of U.S. history and government.
What is the U.S. naturalization process?
It all begins with your application for citizenship. You’ll file Form N-400 with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), provide supporting documents, pay the filing fee, and complete a biometric appointment. From there, you’ll be scheduled for an interview and required to pass the citizenship exam before taking the Oath of Allegiance to officially become a U.S. citizen.
What is the citizenship (naturalization) exam?
The naturalization exam tests your English proficiency and knowledge of U.S. civics. During your interview, a USCIS officer will ask you up to 10 civics questions from an official list of 100. You must answer at least 6 correctly to pass. You’ll also complete reading, writing, and speaking portions to show your English skills.
What happens if I don’t pass the exam the first time?
Don’t worry — you’ll have a second chance. If you fail either the English or civics portion, USCIS will schedule a retest within 60 to 90 days of your first interview. You’ll only need to retake the part you didn’t pass.
What is the Oath of Allegiance ceremony?
After passing the exam and interview, you’ll attend a naturalization ceremony, where you’ll take the Oath of Allegiance. Once you’ve taken the oath and received your Certificate of Naturalization, you officially become a U.S. citizen — with the right to vote, apply for a passport, and enjoy all the benefits of citizenship.

About the Instructor
Hi, I’m Dan. I was born overseas but became a naturalized U.S. citizen after going through the process myself — without a tutor or dedicated help — and realized how valuable it would have been to have someone guide me through it. I’m college and graduate school educated in the United States, and I’m passionate about helping others succeed in this journey.
That’s why I created this in-person tutoring service: to help others who are on the same path. Each session is designed to make the process easier and to give you the confidence you need to pass your naturalization test. My goal is to share practical tips, answer your questions, and provide personal guidance every step of the way.
